Sibling Popularity Delayed BMW F 800 GS

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Motorcycle enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the arrival of BMW’s new F 800 GS will need to be a bit more patient, as production of the middleweight dual-purpose enduro will be delayed due to worldwide demand for the popular F 650 GS.

The F 800 GS is expected to be available at US BMW Motorrad retailers in Fall 2008, making it a 2009 model.

Fulfilling a need for a pure off-road oriented motorcycle that still has all the power, handling and reliability required for long-distance adventure touring as well as on-street handling, the F 800 GS is perfectly positioned as a middleweight dual-purpose enduro. The BMW’s dual sport bike , follows in the footsteps of its highly acclaimed “older brother” - the R 1200 GS - which traces its roots back to the early 1980s when BMW won the grueling Paris-Dakar rally four times with its trailblazing dual-purpose R 80 G/S.

The F 800 GS, BMW’s latest dual-purpose enduro, features an asymmetrical double headlight and a look that is sleek, trim and 100% aggressive. With a compact 85-horsepower parallel twin engine, lightweight steel trellis frame and double-sided swingarm, along with a chain drive and longer front and rear suspension travel, there has never been a BMW dual-purpose machine offering such a unique blend of power, comfort and off-road muscle.

The 2008 BMW Motorrad GS line features the upgraded R 1200 GS and GS Adventure models, which will arrive in dealerships this Spring. Since their debut in 2004, the versatile R 1200 GS and its rugged companion, the R 1200 GS Adventure, have earned praise from motorcycle enthusiasts and the press for their exceptional performance both on and off the road.

The R 1200 GS has earned award after award, including Cycle World’s Best Open Class Street Bike and the International Journalist’s Panel “Best Bike in the World.” For 2008, this go-anywhere motorcycle has several enhancements that meet the demands of serious motorcyclists on both dirt and pavement. A new aluminum handlebar which can be mounted in two positions offers increased ergonomics, making its seated (or standing while off-road) position even more comfortable. Its engine offers 5% more power and its new transmission ratios also mean quicker acceleration and better low-speed traction.

The R 1200 GS Adventure - named “Best Adventure Bike” three years in a row by editors of Motorcyclist Magazine - also offers a number of significant features that make it even more adept at riding to the ends of the earth. In addition to new design elements, including two-part, two-color hand protectors, the new 2008 R 1200 GS Adventure provides a taller windshield, adjustable seat and extra wide foot pegs making long days in the saddle both comfortable and enjoyable. A generous 8.7 gallon fuel tank allows the rider to cover vast areas of territory easier and optional ABS enhances braking safety when required.

The most significant technological development found on both the 2008 R 1200 GS and GS Adventure models is optional enduro ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) technology (a first-time offering for BMW off-road bikes) with three damper settings - Sport, Normal and Comfort — giving riders the option of customizing both front and rear suspensions to his or her specifications. Whether they are navigating the urban jungle or touring off the beaten path, these GS models have set a new standard for the entire adventure bike category.

- When checking out motorcycles at trade leads, do not tend to underestimate your biking ability. Some riders are not aware of it, but most of the time, buying motorbikes with really powerful and impressive engines is like buying motorbikes that would almost run on its own. The rider’s ability to balance and make use of sheer talent and practical ability on riding a bike is compromised. Experts advise riders, especially beginners, to first prefer or buy smaller and simpler motorcycles like pocket bikes, for instance, until the time the rider becomes more at ease, comfortable and skilled at motorbike riding. After some time, or until the rider is truly made comfortable and really seasoned in bike riding, that would be the time investing in more powerful and even fancy motorbikes would be advisable.

- Trade leads could present the most attractive and used motorcycles but you have to bear in mind and stick to your needs. Do you need a large or a small one? Moreover, you should also consider the general purpose of the motorbike. Will it be used to travel very long distances? Will it be more of a drag or a space filler when driven in a road that is usually congested with traffic? Nowadays, it is advisable to remain practical.

- Motorcycles should fit the body of the rider. Will the motorcycle of your choice be proportional and optional for your body size? If you are a little bulky, isn’t it more appropriate to buy a motorbike that would apparently and practically get along with your body size? That is why trade leads are there for. You would be given more time and options to contemplate for your biking purchase.

- Lastly, you should also look at your own long-term budget. Motorcycles are often also costly, especially if you would buy branded and quality ones. History of Harley Davidson Motorcycle

Friday, August 1st, 2008

When it comes to the motorcycle, the Harley Davidson is the gold standard. It is the royalty of this two-cycled motor vehicle industry. But its prominence and position at the top was not achieved overnight. It took a lot of hard work and patience to reach the position in the industry that they have now. And it took decades to earn the respect of both consumers and friends in the industry.

The Harley-Davidson Motor Company is based in Wisconsin. Along with Victory Motors, it is one of the two remaining mass producers of motorcycles in the United States. But what sets apart the Harley from other motorcycles that are being manufactured is its design and its sound, which made it an overnight sensation way back. Although neighborhood watchmen and people who love a nice and quiet night will not agree to this, the sheer loudness of the sound of a Harley Motorcycle is what consumers love about it.

The company began in 1903 when a 21 year old enterprising young man dreamed of a small engine that will eventually replace the 7.07 cubic and four-inch flywheels. Its small size is actually meant to be put in a regular bicycle to make it faster.

For two years, William Harley and his friend Arthur Davidson worked on the idea. With the help of Arthur’s brother Walter, they finished their first prototype but when they tested it, they found that it was not strong enough to be used in climbing hills without the aid of pedals. So they worked on again and made some adjustments and improvements.

These motorcycles are economical in many ways. Some third world countries have started producing their local scooters and bikes so that almost any person who manages to save a little amount of money can afford a scooter easily.

It is hard to categorize bikes because now the ordinary Yamahas are beginning to come in the markets with the same features as those of trail or heavy bikes. Not exactly the same but a lot of features are being installed in all kinds of bikes. They are now more comfortable and smooth to ride on.

Bikes are of numerous types. An ATV drift has become dominant over the past few years. In ATV, there is a raptor 700R GYTR edition; its key features are much more advanced. It is appealing for bike lovers as it has special graphics system, all new skid plates and more powerful engine that can make this bike race in all sorts of riding environments. It is basically a sports bike and it is used in bike racing and over the years it has earned the reputation of the best racer in the world.

Motorcycle Trikes

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

A strange new motorcycle has recently been seen by some motorists - a motorcycle trike. They encounter it at gas pumps and on the interstate highways. They see the motorcycle trike glistening way up ahead on the road and can’t quite figure out what it is. They speed up to get a better look.

Kids roll down the windows and yell, “Hey, what is that thing?”

The owner of this likeable 3-wheeled vehicle just smiles back and says, “It’s a trike.”

For most people this is not enough information. If they happen to see you standing next to your motorcycle trike at a gas pump or in a parking lot, they come over briskly before you know they’re there and barrage you with questions. If you desire the solitary life with your motorcycle, never convert it to a motorcycle trike.

I knew that motorcycle trikes were attention getters but you really find out when you own one.

When I converted my white 1998 Gold Wing SE motorcycle to a trike for my wife, I found that I was totally ignored and everyone was drawn to her trike as if it were a magnet. Then when I found that the advantages of the trike were starting to become more obvious to me, I decided to convert my own 2000 Gold Wing SE to a trike also. Double trouble! Now we had to field questions about both conversions.

The following are the stock motorcycle trike questions we get asked all the time. Please memorize these so you can help inform your own friends and family should you come upon a trike minding its own business:
